Covering the impact of coronavirus on the sports world
The most valuable sports card of all time has been sold for a whopping $6.6 million. The card is a T206 Honus Wagner — one of the move coveted sports cards on the planet — that dates back to 1909. The bidding for the Pirates‘ legend’s card began on July 23 and opened at $1 million.
The number skyrocketed from there.
«This is an incredible result that speaks to this card’s status as one of the world’s most iconic collectibles,» Robert Edward Auctions President Brian Dwyer said. «The rarity and the legend of the T206 Honus Wagner, coupled with the quality of this example, excited bidders who recognized it may be a very long time before an opportunity like this came around again.»
The card is known as one of the most recognizable in all of sports, even though less than 60 of them exist. The Wagner card is part of one of the most iconic baseball-card collecting sets, the T206 White Border series, which was issued between 1909 and 1911 by the American Tobacco Company.
Wagner stopped production of his card because he didn’t want kids buying cigarettes in order to get his card in their hands.
The previous record for the most expensive sports card was held by a Mickey Mantle 1952 card that sold for $5.2 million earlier in 2021.
